Environmental Factors:

There are a range of environmental issues that are caused when using cleaning products and materials. The major concern is that the chemicals which cleaning products contain may pollute streams and rivers and may take a long time to degrade into harmless products. Not only are there an endless number of cleaning products on our shelves but they come in a great range of packaging. Many products are produced in aerosol cans, containing a propellant gas, often chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which, although non-toxic and chemically inert, are proven to damage the ozone layer. Most come in plastic containers which although light and durable are very slow to biodegrade if not recycled properly. 

 

Health Factors:

Many people are cautious about the cleaning products used in their homes due to health issues such as asthma, allergies or sensitivity during pregnancy. Some cause acute, or immediate, hazards such as skin or respiratory irritation, watery eyes, or chemical burns, while others are associated with chronic, or long-term, effects such as cancer.

There will inevitably be pollution in our water systems and in some cases they may not break down at all and may persist in the environment. These may enter the food chain, being eaten by aquatic creatures and perhaps eventually by us.
